What is Two-Way Communication?

Put simply, it’s the process of having a healthy conversation with your horse.

I’m certain many people believe they are creating space in their relationship for this dialogue to occur; however, the bulk of traditional training interactions are, more often than not, one-way conversations.

The person asks the horse to do certain behaviours and activities, often without truly considering how the horse feels about it. Sure, the horse may respond in this dynamic - yet their feelings are often ignored in the pursuit of contorting them to align with what the human desires.

This is not a healthy relationship where two-way communication is present.

A healthy relationship involves:

  • Time together where you are both enjoying yourselves

  • The opportunity to express how you truly feel

  • The space to allow one another to lead and follow in a balanced way

  • The ability to adjust what you are doing to meet your needs

  • Cultivating a foundation of safety for you to thrive

  • The capacity to listen to one another

  • Valuing your individuality and uniqueness in your partnership

  • The openness to learn and grow together

I know this is true because, upon reflection, I spent years having one-way conversations with my horses. Then I traversed the path to welcome in two-way conversations - and holy moly - it is incredible to have the ability to form deeper connections with our horses.
